From Commitment to Action: Global and Local Philanthropy for Locally-Led Development

WINGS, Alianza Socioambiental Fondos del Sur • Socio-Environmental Funds of the Global South, GivingTuesday and Global Fund for Community Foundations invite you to a conversation on global cooperation for locally-led and resourced development. The momentum towards shifting power to locally-led development has gathered speed in recent years, recognising the need for more equitable, localised investment and resource deployment in the face of intersecting crises. Increasing numbers of aid agencies and foundations are committed to bridging the gap with local needs and communities. To help meet their commitments, international funders want and need to partner with domestic philanthropy and its support ecosystems. This will help increase and harness local assets and cultures of giving, build the channels and conduits for international funding to reach communities and movements that are on the frontline of the interconnected crises of inequality, climate impacts, and conflicts, and lead to greater sustainability and resilience.

Join us for a conversation on how the international funding community is moving from commitment to action on locally-led development through investment in local philanthropy and giving. We will explore the current state of the philanthropy support ecosystem for communities and grassroots movements in Latin America and Africa, introduce recent research findings, and introduce new partnerships and mechanisms created to accelerate the growth and effectiveness of local philanthropy and giving. Participants will hear from representatives of aid agencies and international and local philanthropies about their approaches to locally-led development, and opportunities for collaboration to move from commitment to action.
